Polish - when is it bad

Postby Cyril B » Wed Mar 23, 2011 8:17 am

The tittle said it all,
I did some research before, but I figured i'd ask you guys in the end.
I was thinking of polishing my 03 sedan, but read in some articles that it's bad to do it if you have little paint.
I just wanted to know, how was it possible to find out if it's not bad to polish it, leading to a worse case.

Thanks.

The thing is the car has been around for a long time, just wondered if its bad if I did it.
What could be the consequences?

Going right thru the paint into the primer.... that's what can happen if you go to far with a polishing compound.

A cleaner/wax like Meguiars or Nu Finish, (some clean old socks & towels), and a little elbow grease in the shade can do wonders.

depending what color your car is you might end up taking different steps. the racy red color has no clear. its a high gloss paint, that even some of the lighter compounds will remove gloss.

1st, wash the car. 2nd, Claybar the car section by section using a lubricant during application such as spray wax. 3rd, use paint sealant.

I had my 2005 Suzuki Aerio SX Wagon detailed instead of working on it myself. I am too scared to ruin its paint.

I thought I just had a cheap maaco paint job for some reason. I polished the factory clear coat right off easily. They aren't kidding around when they say thin paint job. The car started looking more orangish instead of red. Eventually had to get a whole new paint job. CRAZY!

The red doesn't have a clear coat its a 2 stage paint. In short its a underbase and a high gloss red. A few of the speciality colors came with a clear.
